Busy guest filled weekend!

August 23, 2010 2 comments

So, as of Friday, my guest room is complete! Well, as complete as the rest of my house. I still need to find a lamp, throw rugs and maybe some curtains.

Welcome Home Granny!

Mom brought me my childhood dresser (also Granny Largent’s, like my bed) and best of all…Granny! My sister-in-law didn’t really want to move into mom’s house if Granny was still there (she gets a little mad when people talk about her and weird stuff happens, like bats flying down chimneys). But I love her! She was quite a strong woman and and very able to take care of herself and think for herself.

The guest room couldn’t have been finished at a better time. Although I’ve already enjoyed having my mom and aunt stay at my house, I got my first non-family guests this weekend! My friends Lauren and Shawn came down from Albany so we had a fun weekend of keeping busy!

We did some further exploring of the Pohick Bay area (not too far from my house) and visited Occoquan with my mom. Then it got interesting for me as I tried to think of places that are *new* since they lived here several years ago. We ended up at National Harbor Saturday night where they set off fireworks just for my visitors! Or at least I like to think so. And Lauren and Shawn had never been to Rosa Mexicano so we enjoyed some tableside guac service, and of course our old favorite, cupcakes from CakeLove (the salted caramel were my favorite)!

My Very Domestic Weekend – I’m now Accepting Reservations!

It almost looks like something out of "Little House" doesn't it!

As if I didn’t already have plenty of furniture for a single girl living alone…Mom showed up Saturday morning with a truck-load of more furniture for my little house. It’s amazing that I live in a completely furnished two bedroom home and I have yet to buy a single piece of furniture for it!

I’m so happy to finally have my “Granny Largent” bed…and hopefully I’ll have visitors soon so I can make use of it! Granny is my great-great-great-great grandmother. Yes, four greats!

Granny’s dresser wouldn’t fit on the truck, so it’ll be arriving sometime within the next month…along with Granny herself (in the form of a super old photo with a funky old frame).

I also got a completely new dining set. My brother is moving into my mom’s house soon and building her a smaller house (that won’t have a formal dining room) so I was lucky enough to be handed down an antique table (the first thing my parents ever bought together at their first estate sale they attended). To go with it, six shaker chairs my father made. It may have taken 13 years to finish them, but I’ve never seen wood so shiny inĀ  my life!

With Mom’s visit came some intense cleaning of the first floor (I love when Mom comes!) so my floors are shining and all the wood furniture is dusted. And there are no little dust critters hiding behind my couch.

On a boat. And full after a lovely brunch!

The domesticity stuck after Mom left. Sunday I was heading to my cousin’s in Annapolis and asked what I should bring for brunch. “Some sort of pastry.”

Good thing I keep banana’s and butter in the freezer so I could whip up a banana bread! Yum!

After all that cleaning and a fun day walking around Annapolis, I was more than ready for a nap Sunday evening. And very tempted to sleep in my new guest room.
